Replacement & Refinishing for a Cracked Lampshade
In this project, Heritage Restoration undertook the meticulous search for a rare and carefully matched replacement glass panel to restore a decades-old stained glass lampshade. Given the unique and no longer manufactured beige-ocher pattern and distinctive textured finish of the original glass, sourcing a suitable replacement required extensive expertise and precision. This effort was part of a comprehensive restoration aimed at preserving the lamp’s historic character while addressing both structural damage and aesthetic concerns.

Details
A stained glass lamp approximately thirty years old was brought to Heritage Restoration for repairs following accidental damage that caused a five-way crack in the glass shade, compromising both its structural integrity and aesthetic appeal. Additionally, the lamp’s base and stem, composed of two different metals, exhibited fading finishes. Heritage Restoration was contracted to repair the glass and refinish the lamp for a cohesive, uniform appearance.
The restoration began with careful disassembly of the glass lampshade. One of the primary challenges was sourcing a replacement glass panel that matched the original beige-ocher pattern. The original glass featured a unique texture: a roughened interior bevel with a smooth exterior surface, a style no longer produced. Our artisans selected the closest available glass and precisely cut it to size.
After installation of the new glass into the metal housing, the shade, base, and stem were refinished with a dark bronze coating, providing a rich contrast to the glass and an elegant, antiqued look. At the client’s request, the lamp’s wiring was updated to meet current safety standards. The lamp is now fully restored and operational.
