Details
The Reading of the Will, painted in the early twentieth century, depicts a group of individuals gathered inside a home, reading a document. Over time, the painting’s surface had accumulated a layer of debris that necessitated thorough cleaning. A primary focus of the restoration was addressing a puncture hole located in the upper right quadrant of the canvas. A patch was carefully applied to the reverse side to provide a stable foundation for touchup painting, allowing the damaged area to be seamlessly integrated with the surrounding background.
Additionally, several pinhole-sized discolorations had developed across the painting due to age. Each of these imperfections was meticulously retouched to restore the original clarity and vibrancy of the interior scene. Special attention was given to preserving the fine details of the figures, the sailing ship, and other elements masterfully rendered by Wagner.
Upon completion of the touchup work and cleaning, a protective varnish was applied to the surface, enhancing the painting’s luminosity while safeguarding it from future deterioration. After allowing the varnish to cure, the artwork was carefully reframed, marking the conclusion of the restoration process.
