Repainting an Old Sacred Heart Statue
Heritage Restoration recently undertook the repair and repainting of this Sacred Heart of Jesus statue. The original faded, cream-colored finish was refreshed with richer reds and enhanced detailing to restore its visual impact.

The statue exhibited significant fading due to age, with its outstretched hands notably damaged and discolored in brown tones that contrasted with the rest of the skin. The client requested that the cream-colored robes be updated to a more traditional red. Minor chips and breaks on the hands required careful patching. The decision was made to refresh the statue’s colors with a subdued palette that would complement, rather than overpower, the church’s interior.
Over several days, the statue was meticulously repainted with rich reds and subtle gold highlights. Enhanced detailing was applied to Christ’s skin and wounds to achieve a more lifelike appearance. Following the drying period, the Sacred Heart statue was carefully returned and reinstalled in the church.
Projects such as this are particularly rewarding, as statuary—like stained glass—serves as both a pictorial element and a vessel of history, bringing life and meaning to the sacred space.
