Refinishing an Antique Entrance

Heritage’s team recently completed the restoration of an antique entrance at St. Bede’s Academy. Due to the necessity of preserving certain trim sections in place, specialized techniques were utilized to carefully repair and refinish each surface. Additionally, several doors, a stained glass window frame, and an original light fixture were meticulously restored to a like-new condition.

Heritage Restoration was honored to restore the ceremonial entrance of St. Bede’s Academy, a historic school founded in 1890. The project’s focal point was a fourteen-foot-tall solid wood archway, over 128 years old, which required careful removal for repairs and refinishing. Using specialized chemical solvents, the deteriorated finish was stripped, revealing the wood’s original rich tones.

To address years of damage, Heritage applied advanced woodworking techniques, including the traditional ‘Dutchman’ patching method. Decades of residue were removed from cracks and crevices across the doors, trim, and surrounding elements. Multiple layers of stain and protective coatings were applied to achieve a deep reddish-brown finish, and a durable sealant was added to protect against weather exposure. The original ornate light fixture was also refinished with gold paint to restore its historic shine.

Once fully dried and cured, Heritage’s team reinstalled the entrance, beginning with the archway, followed by door frames, trim, and doors fitted with new hardware. The restored light fixture was re-hung to illuminate the entryway. After several weeks of meticulous work, the academy’s grand entrance was returned to its original elegance, blending historic authenticity with renewed durability.
