Residential Flooring
For the Homeowner

Designing and restoration in a private residential setting requires a detail oriented and patient mindset. Each homeowner has their own viewpoint and goals, as each project is itself unique. You have a vision or an idea that you want to see incorporated into your home. In the design and restoration fields, there are many things that need to be taken into consideration and put into order before beginning a project. Therefore, Heritage Restoration’s estimators and project leaders make sure they fully understand what your needs and desires are and tailor our approach to your circumstances.

The primary goal of Heritage Restoration and Design is to take whatever time is needed to fully explain the proposal and the subsequent work process as it may apply from project to project. We have found that a constant dialog with clients is critical to a projects success. The client and Heritage Restoration, as the contractor, each have expectations of how a new or restoration project may unfold. Our goal is then to manage these expectations and show how, to varying degrees, they may apply to a project. This level of communication between homeowner and contractor virtually guarantees a successful conclusion to most any project.

HRD Studio Design
For the Architect & Designer

One of Heritage Restoration and Design’s most unique services is our ability to provide pre-contract support for design professionals and architects. Having six generations of expertise and a list of over 800 manufacturers and suppliers, including our own in-house capabilities, we are in a unique position to offer pre-contract information and budgetary pricing assistance. We have been fulfilling this role for many years, providing costs and preliminary designs for a wide variety of building interiors.

After pre-contract work is completed and submitted for the architect’s clients approval, we often provide a detailed and expansive bid as part of the larger bid package, drafted and submitted by architects nationwide. We continue to provide services during this phase of a project.

Should Heritage Restoration and Design be awarded a bid, then we will continue to honor our original support methodology during the entire work project. Good and continuous communication, we find, is critical to all project leaders as well as to our company’s efforts during the work process.

Our goal is to support you, the Architect and Designer. We develop pricing, designs, shop drawings and then fabricate them for interiors, furniture items and art. We take your vision and bring it to reality.

For the Historical Institution

The projects and designs completed by Heritage Restoration and Design Studio often contain a historic component. Our company is rooted in six generations of experience dating back to 1820. We work in many institutions that are of a historic nature, either by age or by certification from historic preservation societies. Sometimes we will restore and preserve entire interiors, while other projects require only the restoration of interior elements such as woodworking, flooring, plaster and paint, lighting, leaded glass windows or items of antiquity. Regardless, our staff is qualified to handle most any type of restoration.

However, we don’t just work in historical buildings. Our designing and manufacturing skills give Heritage Restoration the ability to perform traditional, quality work in any new building. Many of our clients live and work in modern facilities. Often these structures are severely lacking in charm and style. With proper designing, even a stark environment can be ‘accented’ with traditional work. This method adds a great amount of aesthetic appeal and value to a space. When the environment changes for the better, so does the attitude and work ethic of persons in those surroundings.

So, where do we work....
  • Historic and modern structures, or areas with elements that are historic or modern.
    • Homes
    • Courthouses
    • Museums
    • Churches
    • Offices
    • Schools
    • Libraries
    • Etc...

If unique, well-designed traditional work is of interest to you, we are the company to call. Remember, “Design, Restore and Preserve for the Future”.

the family
Today

Heritage Restoration & Design is a family owned corporation whose knowledge has spanned 6 generations. Our company's work can be seen in a variety of buildings across the United States. We specialize in interior design, churches, historical buildings, homes, and health care centers. We offer many artistic products and services with particular emphasis on historical and restorative offerings.

Humble Roots

It's difficult to encapsulate a history of nearly 200 years and six generations. Selecting his home region of Bavaria, Germany, Alois Berlinger founded this small family company in 1820. At that time, work consisted of stone carving and the restoration of building components made of stone. By the third generation, Edmund Berlinger had expanded the company's trade by purchasing a local piece of land to start a stone quarry. In addition, Edmund offered new services such as interior plastering and white washing. During the fourth generation, Gustav, Herman and Alois Berlinger continued on with stone and plaster work while adding several other disciplines as pre-cast concrete and interior finishing.

Alois

One of the three brothers, Alois, immigrated to the the United States in 1965 and started the American branch of the company in Chicago, Illinois. The focus of the company shifted to restoration of building interiors and exteriors. Through his wife’s family (Helga Berlinger, née Lehmeier), woodworking and stained glass work were incorporated in as new skill sets. The company entered its fifth generation with the children of Alois and Helga: Michael, Willibald “Bill” and Erika. A decision was made between the 4th and 5th generation members to re-brand the company. A new road map was created and the result was the incorporation of Heritage Restoration and Design in August of 2004.

Current Owners of HRD

Michael and his wife, Kathryn, are now in the leadership positions of Heritage Restoration and Design. With the dramatic changes in the US economy after 2001 and early 2010's, Heritage’s leadership recognized the challenge to the firm and used the opportunity to reaffirm its strategic plan. With a revitalized need to ‘preserve and restore’, Heritage expanded into new restoration markets with its diversified skill set and knowledge base. Michael and Kathryn’s sons, Stephen, Christopher, Joseph, and Anthony have also joined the company. As the sixth generation, they are bringing in new ideas to grow and strengthen the firm. Heritage Restoration and Design Studio is poised for the future. Projects are expanding into the restoration and preservation of government facilities and commercial structures, as well as religious, educational and healthcare locations.
